Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water

Note to readers: it's currently Thanksgiving weekend, and i've lapsed in transferring these things over to the blog (but still posting daily to facebook). I'm going to just go back to binge posting these things in an attempt to catch up with myself. They are still in chronological order, even though i stopped documenting the actual day. I'm also going to stop searching out youtube links. You know how to find these things for yourself...

... and so, completely unintentionally, we round out week three with the last Simon and Garfunkel album: Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water.

I honestly didn't notice it until i had actually decided to write about this album, but there's a paul on days 7, 14, and 21. My subconscious works overtime, and the fact that my dad passed away on a monday (labor day) never even crossed my mind. Morbid, but completely coincidental.

It's also the last Simon and Garfunkel album, even though they didn't actually know it while it was happening.

Coincidences.

It's an album about Simon and Garfunkel, even though paul simon didn't necessarily intend it that way. It's all over the place, musically speaking. It's an album about absence, and friendship, and breaking away and coming home, and two people creating something much bigger than themselves. All those things are coincidental as well.

It has the first 16-track recording, made by manually synching two 8-track machines. It's been misinterpreted, and certain aspects of its making led Simon on his world music path.

More and more coincidences. The more i ramble on, the tighter the tapestry weaves itself.

One last coincidence: my friend Steven Stark 's singing voice sounds identical to Art Garfunkel's (not to single him out or anything, it's just fascinating to hear considering his penchant for Artie's later music).

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Hit & Run Holiday

I noticed today that the strange part of the world who actually knows about My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult has finally accepted that they are in fact "industrial disco." The history of Wax Trax and Chicago industrial music is a subject worthy of an entire library, but MLWTTK is my favorite band to emerge from those humble record store beginnings. They are an unpredictable band for sure, and i definitely don't like all of their albums, but Hit & Run Holiday is an album i think every human being on the planet should hear at least once. This album is simply impossible to describe, because it doesn't actually belong to a musical genre as we understand them. It's actually a movie. I know that sounds weird, but the band is actually a movie. My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult was the name of the movie they were trying to make, but composing the soundtrack led them so far afield that they just shrugged and kept going as a band instead. Live - Secret Samadhi

Speaking of smorgasbords and ladies' bathrooms, here's Live's Secret Samadhi. The title at least implies that the album is a meditation on reality, but it's Ed Kowalczyk so i have to keep a dictionary close because i don't have a clue who/what he's referring to half the time. Sure i know that Lakini is the goddess of the Manipura (solar plexus/navel) Chakra, but what does washing her feet with water from the women's bathroom toilet actually mean? Jesco White is a mildly famous folk dancer/entertainer, but he's not dead so how could you lay flowers at his grave? "The followers of Aldous are spinning with their mescaline," Aldous Huxley obviously, but what does that have to do with the secondary thematic concept of intellectual propery? I can't even begin to dissect the convoluted metaphors of Ghost, and we're not even halfway through the album.
