Thrupence - Structures


We interrupt this story i honestly lost interest in telling last Friday for a better story. My copy of Structures by Thrupence arrived today. No joke, I ordered this thing on Christmas Eve, it went through customs in Chicago on Sunday, and now i can bask in the warm neon glow of some truly wonderful Ambient Melodic House. Even better, i got to do the Discogs listing and upload photos of my personal copy number 61 of 100. 

Not much to review though, as electronica goes this is a soft, fuzzy, warm blanket on a rainy night. If you're confused about why he uses both names, it's because Jack Vanzet is a multi-disciplinary artist, and Thrupence is his musical persona. The design, art, and animation is Jack collaboratimg with himself. 

Now, there is one coin flip of a situation, and it's the inclusion of both the full Diminishing Light with guest vocalist Fractures and the instrumental only. Depending on what kind of mood you're in, it might totally be annoying to hear both back to back. It might also be annoying to have to sit up and skip one or the other. Personally though, if you're expecting it then it's quite nice to hear the full song then get to hear what you might have missed because you were paying attention to the vocals. If you accept that that's the point of Side B, then it's fine.

Unfortunately, it is an extremely limited run of only 100 and they sold out rather quickly. Unfortunately again, you can't have my physical copy 61/100 for anything less than an astonishingly exhorbitant amount of money because it's glorious, but fortunately you can listen to it on bandcamp and check out the full animated art campaign on his website for no expense. I think you'll agree that's pretty inexpensive for a delightful half hour of strings and synths and gently thumping kick drums.

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Hit & Run Holiday

I noticed today that the strange part of the world who actually knows about My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult has finally accepted that they are in fact "industrial disco." The history of Wax Trax and Chicago industrial music is a subject worthy of an entire library, but MLWTTK is my favorite band to emerge from those humble record store beginnings. They are an unpredictable band for sure, and i definitely don't like all of their albums, but Hit & Run Holiday is an album i think every human being on the planet should hear at least once. This album is simply impossible to describe, because it doesn't actually belong to a musical genre as we understand them. It's actually a movie. I know that sounds weird, but the band is actually a movie. Eyrth - Meridian

A terrible sadness accompanies the release of Meridian by Latvian Ambient Metal band EYRTH. Since their debut Fracture in early 2019 the band, and indeed the whole world has suffered a global pandemic, intense ideo-political turmoil, the death of friend and bandmate Igor Golovin, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  The war in Ukraine still wages on, even though we in the Western hemisphere seem to have largely forgotten. These are turbulent times, and Alex and Andrey are rightfully entering an extended break. We may not see or hear new music from them for a while, if ever, and that is completely understandable.
