Moon Hooch - This Is Cave Music

I wasn't overly thrilled with last night's offering from the Moody Blues, so tonight i'm going to say now This Is Cave Music (Ha! Get it? 'Cause the cover was a cave painting. Oh, how droll i am).

I don't have the aptly self titled debut album by Moon Hooch, but since this one starts off with No. 6 of their initial compositions i'll take a moment to point out the first album was recorded in 24 hours in Brooklyn.

They spent some money and took a little more time with their second album. There's some synths and vocals on it, but they are pretty ok and it works with their persona. For those who don't know, Moon Hooch is saxophone based dance/rave music. To put it in SAT terms, Electronic is to House as Acoustic is to Cave (again with the allusive humor: the band met in college. I'm on fire tonight).

They honed their style busking in the NYC Subway, which contrary to what you might have thought requires an actual audition and license, unless you want to go to jail instead of home at the end of your performance.

In real life they are modern day hippies. They spend their days volunteering at community gardens and self-sustaining communities near whatever city their gig is in that night. Some of the stuff they do is a little wacky, but they seem like genuinely cool guys. And, their music is awesome and super high energy.

The great thing about this trio is they don't sound forced, or gimmicky, or out of touch. It's legitimate club music (this album really does play out like a DJ set) made with saxophones and drums. It's got a beat, you can dance to it, and you literally can't frown while you listen to it because it's not dumbed down or formulaic either. They're awesome. Go check 'em out.
