Prelude to the first half of the Megadeth discography
Ok. Megadeth time. I only care about their first 7 albums, my Megadeth stops at Hidden Treasures. The reason is complicated.
I've mentioned it before, but 1995 is kind of a tipping point in my mind. It wasn't that grunge killed mainstream music, or that the internet was starting to make an impact, or even that major labels started wildly flailing around and preventing bands from getting popular without their support. What really happened is that my generation finally said "screw it." We were tired of even trying to succeed in the world of business. Pick a person who "achieved success" and i'll point to the guy or gal he ripped off to achieve it. Corporate America reached a tipping point where the wealthiest Americans said to themselves "it's more important to profit from pumping disposable garbage into the world and use that money to feel happy and shoot tigers and live by the lake than it is to care about the working class and their families," and we responded by saying "i'm already miserable, so have fun watching us get worse." I'm not saying we were right for giving up, i'm simply pointing out that we did. I might be the youngest gen-xer on the planet, but age is unimportant. To paraphrase Ron White, i've got a lot of quit in me. You can pretend that this country is functional, but our economy is a lottery economy. 25 years later, we think it's pretty awesome that the kids of today have the spark and gumption to start fighting back again. We're going to keep encouraging them, by the way. Not because we're right, but because bite me.
Sadly, 1995 is the point in time where Dave Mustaine lost his way. He started looking to cash in on his metal stardom and reach for the mainstream radio alternative rock money, and i said meh guess i don't care about Megadeth anymore. Oh well, i'll survive. That's not to say Megadeth hasn't produced some good songs in the last decade, it's just that i don't care. There's no value in it for me anymore.
These albums though, i completely understand. First half Megadeth exists for only 1 purpose: to be "x-er" than Metallica. See you later tonight with their debut....
