Sevendust - Next

One of these things is not like the others, one of these things is good. Spoiler alert, it's Rosie Ledet playing the accordion and singing songs chocked full of innuendo! So instead we'll listen to the underwhelming fifth album from Sevendust.

I didn't compare Fire from the Gods to Sevendust for no reason. Lajon Witherspoon doesn't rap, this is straight up alternative metal with alternating scream singing. It's djent before Meshuggah inspired Misha Mansoor to coin the term djent.

It's not a bad album because the band did a bad job, it's a bad album because they were lost in the universe and writing track after potential radio/soundtrack/anything track because it's 2005.

They had lineup changes, and left TVT for Winedark's promise of Universal's distribution channels. They recorded this in the same house Creed used for Weathered. Winedark was secretly already folding, stopped funding anything without telling the band, the band was maxing out every credit card they had trying to keep their crew fed, and then they found out their accountant hadn't bothered to pay their taxes for them either.  Million dollars in the hole and fans were actually asking when the new album was coming out 'cause no advertising whatsoever from their label. It's actually much better than i remember, but no it's not  fantastically amazing, or magically delicious. Better than Allmusic's 2.5 stars, Allmusic freelancers are terrible after all, but not by more than 1 additional star. Again, songs for the sake of songs is a crap concept. I will say, you could pick any song from it as a great representation of Sevendust in whatever mix you're making, but as a full album it really is "Next!"
