Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses


You like Gothic Metal, right? Who doesn't? Let's go back to probably the only platinum selling goth metal album, or at the very least the first. It's Type O Negative's 3rd album, Bloody Kisses. The Drab Four are known for three things. 1) there will never be another Peter Steele, 2) they were hilarious, and 3) the scandalous cover of Bloody Kisses. 

First, there shouldn't be another Peter Steele, the first one was more than you deserve. Last, the notion that two girls kissing on the cover in 1993 was scandalous is ridiculous compared to the Voodoo-U cover in 1994 (full on cartoon lesbian devil orgy). On to the humor.

Romance, sex, death, and a straight cover of Summer Breeze, because Seals really didn't like Peter's parody lyrics (reprinted in the liner notes). I think their humor is best summed up by the video for Black No. 1, where Kenny is playing doom riffs on a 12-string acoustic and Peter has an actual double bass hanging around his neck. There's sitar on this album too. Everyone pretty much agrees it's like Black Sabbath meets the Beatles and we're all dead, or undead, or about to die, or haven't noticed that we're dead and keep talking. Goth really just means aesthetic appreciation of the mysterious and dark, or occult. It comes from the dark side of post-punk like Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Cure, etc. But this is metal, so crank it up 7 notches. Loving you is like loving the dead, i guess it's too late to apologize now that you're dead, we're all just mopey vampires here, am i right? Why don't we put a psych-rock jam in the middle of this song? 

I have the second release where the band cut out the interludes and filler. It's still a whopping hour and seven minutes of sludgy doom so don't make plans for the rest of the evening. Or put it on while you're dying your hair black, can't go out with your roots showing....

Eyrth - Meridian

A terrible sadness accompanies the release of Meridian by Latvian Ambient Metal band EYRTH. Since their debut Fracture in early 2019 the band, and indeed the whole world has suffered a global pandemic, intense ideo-political turmoil, the death of friend and bandmate Igor Golovin, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  The war in Ukraine still wages on, even though we in the Western hemisphere seem to have largely forgotten. These are turbulent times, and Alex and Andrey are rightfully entering an extended break. We may not see or hear new music from them for a while, if ever, and that is completely understandable. The music they've created, however, is truly breathtaking. Self-described as "Uranium wreckage in audio," the music of Eyrth is every bit as hauntingly beautiful as it is brutally crushing. My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Hit & Run Holiday

I noticed today that the strange part of the world who actually knows about My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult has finally accepted that they are in fact "industrial disco." The history of Wax Trax and Chicago industrial music is a subject worthy of an entire library, but MLWTTK is my favorite band to emerge from those humble record store beginnings. They are an unpredictable band for sure, and i definitely don't like all of their albums, but Hit & Run Holiday is an album i think every human being on the planet should hear at least once. This album is simply impossible to describe, because it doesn't actually belong to a musical genre as we understand them. It's actually a movie. I know that sounds weird, but the band is actually a movie. My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult was the name of the movie they were trying to make, but composing the soundtrack led them so far afield that they just shrugged and kept going as a band instead.
