Focus

I said i like The Magician's Birthday, but that Uriah Heep didn't really know what they were doing. I stand by that opinion, and today i'll show you an album by a much less famous band formed in the same year (1969) who did know exactly what they were doing. Sadly, most people only remember 2 things about Focus: the wacky first track from Moving Waves, and that Jan Akkerman was a completely underrated, bad-ass guitar slinger.

I don't own any of their albums but i sure wish i did. These Dutch weirdos are all over the map, from classical to hard rock to easy listening, and they did it all without trying to force themselves to write pointless lyrics just so they could maybe have hit songs.

Focus is the reason i don't really like a lot of 70s glam or prog rock. They are way more enjoyable for me than Uriah Heep, or Bowie, or Yes, or Slade, or Jethro Tull, or any other english art rock show group from the early 70s.

Moving Waves and Hamburger Concerto are great albums. Focus takes all the things that define 70s rock (from mindblowing jam sessions, to neo-classical, to the cheesiest of white funk and soft jazz), and unashamedly uses them to write actual compositions. Give them a try.
