Eddie Kendricks - Slick

A while ago i teased Motown, then gave you the old switcheroo. I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you by opening another 50-cent gem, Eddie Kendricks's Slick.

I thought about bringing out the Supremes, but Eddie Kendricks influenced their creation in the first place. I thought about doing another work-up and again thwarting expectations by looking at the stranger side of Motown, but i'm not in the right frame of mind. After Average White Band and Donna Summer, I just want to hear some real soul sung in falsetto by one of the founding members of the Temptations. I want to hear another producer's album with good songs (and let me tell you, Leonard Caston and friends can write some songs). Believe it or not, I even want a Seals & Crofts cover thrown in there.

This was Eddie's last record for Motown and it compliments Summer's The Wanderer quite nicely. Donna went in a new direction when she signed to Geffen, but Eddie left his group and label because he didn't want to change. You can't blame him; he's a Smoky Robinson protege through and through. Eddie sticks to his shtick, but he's definitely not stale. Smooth, suave, sultry, sophisticated. Slick is an often overlooked gem of late 70s soul.
